Sunday Exclusive: Michael Savage, Autism is “A Fraud, A Racket”
I received this information via e-mail, which I quickly verified here. I also was able to obtain the script so you could hear for yourself what Michael Savage, a well known radio host said on the air.
Savage said Autism is “A fraud, a racket.” As the mother of one deceased Autistic child and one living Autistic child I find his remarks completely unfounded, cruel, reprehensible and hateful. No one truly educated would make such remarks without a foundation to base them on, which Savage cannot do.
This is purely Savage’s opinion, which under free speech he is entitled to have. However, he is not entitled to slander, misrepresent, and misconstrue facts about Autism.
Dare I say his remarks regarding Autism are “savage?”
Via email:
Dear Friend,
On July 16, the No. 3 syndicated radio talk show host in the country, Michael Savage, made the following statement on autism:
“Now, you want me to tell you my opinion on autism? … A fraud, a racket.”
Savage went on to say:
Now, the illness du jour is autism. You know what autism is? I’ll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out. That’s what autism is.
What do you mean they scream and they’re silent? They don’t have a father around to tell them, “Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.”
Autism — everybody has an illness. If I behaved like a fool, my father called me a fool. And he said to me, “Don’t behave like a fool.” The worst thing he said — “Don’t behave like a fool. Don’t be anybody’s dummy. Don’t sound like an idiot. Don’t act like a girl. Don’t cry.” That’s what I was raised with. That’s what you should raise your children with. Stop with the sensitivity training. You’re turning your son into a girl, and you’re turning your nation into a nation of losers and beaten men. That’s why we have the politicians we have.
During the same broadcast, Savage also attacked those in “the minority community” who suffer from asthma. He stated: “[W]hy was there an asthma epidemic amongst minority children? Because I’ll tell you why: The children got extra welfare if they were disabled, and they got extra help in school. It was a money racket. Everyone went in and was told [fake cough], ‘When the nurse looks at you, you go [fake cough], “I don’t know, the dust got me.” ‘ See, everyone had asthma from the minority community.”
Michael Savage’s mean-spirited comments are disgusting and are an affront to basic decency.
The Savage Nation reaches at least 8.25 million listeners each week, according to Talkers Magazine, making it one of the most listened-to talk radio shows in the nation, behind only The Rush Limbaugh Show and The Sean Hannity Show.
Your voice is critical in holding Savage accountable for his comments. I hope you take the time to call and tell those running the station exactly what you think of Michael Savage.
Thank you,

What is becoming of this world?
People are insulting each other. People are lying and misconstruing facts to suit their own personal purposes and agendas. Some even do this on their blogs to attain notoriety, sympathy, or worse, a sense of superiority over others. Belittling others has become an American past-time.
I would like to let people know that as the mother of a ten-year-old Autistic child whom when he was younger did cry and scream - did rock back and forth, my son had a father that was there. My husband held our son, loved our son and comforted him. He never called our son any filthy or derogatory names, ever. This is why today our son is doing well in school to a certain degree, he is doing well amongst his peers and also, amongst people in social settings. He is not without problems however.
Academically he is behind. He will be going into a contained classroom this year instead of mainstreaming him as we have done over the last four years, because of academic issues and some personal socialization issues. But by far he is considered high functioning despite his sometimes difficulty in processing situations and changes.
My son has two parents that have loved him since the day he was born and have always supported him. I have advocated on behalf of my son so that he would always receive the best psychological services, socialization services, and academic services over the years. He is not a spoiled brat or dumb as Savage would want people to believe Autistic children supposedly are.
Savage points out that if he had acted like “Autistic” children his father would have called him an “idiot.” On a personal level I can understand why Savage might feel and believe the way he does, because his father treated him cruelly and Savage believes his fathers idiocy. That is a sad vicious circle that many families fight to overcome - not to repeat the sins of their fathers and or mothers - perhaps both. Sadly sometimes we do just that, repeat our parents mistakes - as in Savage’s case.
Looking back to my first Autistic child who died twelve years ago - he was an Autistic Savant. He was an excellent artist. He was articulate and intelligent in so many ways. Yet he could only write his name, barely. He could not count beyond twenty, if that - and he did not remember all his ABC’s. He had no conceptual understanding of money, its use, and value at all. He learned to interact socially and attended a school that specialized in Autism specifically.
In fact, we both were on the Easter Seals Telethon back in 1994. My son was a wonderful child, but impulsive. Like many Autistic children that suffer from many of the broad spectrum abnormalities and disorders, one of the more severe pitfalls is that some of these children will sneak out of their homes via windows or right out the front door. That is why my son is dead today. He walked right out of our front door while I was cooking in the kitchen. I never heard him come down the stairs or go out the front door. He was smart and knew how to be quiet and sneaky.
If he had lived he would be twenty-one now. But to me he will always be that little eight and a half year-old boy that brought me much joy. The little boy that told me only a month before he died that he would take care of me when I get old and that he did not want me to die before him, “because I would miss you Mommy.”
If I really believed it would make a difference I would tell Savage this, but at the end of the day I know I would only be speaking to the choir and they sing too loudly to hear anything but their own shallow voices.
What ever happened to compassion for the less fortunate?

It is good to be back on the Internet. You do not realize how much you depend on the Internet until it is not there. It is not just about not being able to access my blog or e-mails, but all the other intangibles that you take fore granted that the Internet offers.
up on one of his offers one of these days - that tree line out in front of my house sure was cruising for a bruising. You know Jersey’s just a hop and a skip to the D.C. area and that’s no prob for Tony. Right Bernie? Yeah I know, I am smiling too. You done good boss, the place looks great! Thank you.
Now down to business. I am thoroughly disgusted and disheartened by the people that disrespected Tony Snow in the wake of his untimely death.
